What are your thoughts about microdosing for anxiety?

Microdosing involves taking very small doses of psychedelic substances like LSD, typically around 1/10th to 1/20th of a standard recreational dose. The goal is to experience potential benefits like improved mood, reduced anxiety and depression, increased focus and creativity, without the intense psychoactive effects of a full dose.

However, the scientific evidence on microdosing's mental health effects is still limited. Most data comes from self-reported anecdotes and observational studies rather than rigorous clinical trials.

Some research shows that the benefits are equal to placebo and subjective, which means each person will have a unique experience.

Other studies have shown that people who tried microdosing stopped because they experienced no benefit, or the benefit was minimal, short-lived, and subsided over time.

However, there are risks involved, including:

  • Lack of research on long-term effects and safety.
  • Potential side effects like reduced focus, increased anxiety, and uncomfortable and uncontrollable sensations.
  • Risks for those with underlying mental health disorders.
  • Legal risks, as the substances used are often illegal.
  • Potential for physical and psychological addiction, and
  • Potential heart-related diseases.

Since anxiety can be overcome naturally through behavior modification, I'm not an advocate of taking a recreational drug to manage anxiety.

This is no different than drinking alcohol to manage anxiety.

While alcohol can make a person feel more relaxed, it can also set up physical, psychological, and emotional dependence and has been linked to many physical health problems over the long term.

So again, I don’t recommend microdosing to manage anxiety.

I believe it’s far better to address anxiety issues naturally through therapy and behavior modification, which provides long-term success with no side effects or long-term health consequences.

Recovery Support

The Recovery Support area of our website contains thousands of pages of important self-help information to help individuals overcome anxiety disorder, hyperstimulation, and symptoms.

Due to the vast amount of information, including a private Discussion Forum, many of our Recovery Support members consider it their online recovery support group.

The combination of good self-help information and working with an experienced anxiety disorder therapist, coach, or counselor is the most effective way to address anxiety and its many symptoms. Until the core causes of anxiety are addressed – which we call the underlying factors of anxiety – a struggle with anxiety unwellness can return again and again. Dealing with the underlying factors of anxiety is the best way to address problematic anxiety.
