I understand worry creates stress, and stress can cause and sustain hyperstimulation. My problem is that I worry about every new anxiety symptom. Since there are so many anxiety symptoms that can change and shift without warning, how will I ever fully recover from anxiety and hyperstimulation?

As an ex-anxiety disorder sufferer, I understand how this scenario can seem hopeless since anxiety and hyperstimulation can cause so many symptoms. The good news is that everyone can recover, and much easier than first thought.

Here are some of the ways we can overcome this common barrier to recovery:

1. Address your anxiety issues, especially worry.

Anxiety is caused by behavior, which is learned. Just as we learned to cope with adversity, uncertainty, and risk in unhealthy, anxious ways, such as worry, we can learn to cope in healthy, non-anxious ways.

Addressing your anxiety issues can help you make this important behavioral change, especially in eliminating worry, including worrying about anxiety symptoms.

As you address your anxiety issues, your symptoms will diminish, and you’ll get sufficient evidence to prove your symptoms were solely attributable to stress, including anxiety-caused stress. Then, there will be nothing to worry about. And you’ll have addressed your anxiety issues, eliminating a need to worry.

Overcoming your anxiety issues ends the worry-symptoms-worry cycle.

2. Learn containment.

You’ll also learn the skill of “containment” as you address your anxiety issues. Learning to contain can substantially reduce and eliminate fears and any need to worry.

Containment is one of the Seven Principles to Conquering Anxiety Disorder, eliminating one of the most common causes of hyperstimulation and anxiety symptoms.

3. Get medical reassurance.

We always recommend discussing all new, persistent, changing, and returning symptoms with your doctor to ensure they are solely anxiety-related. This reassurance can help you contain your worries about your symptoms.

4. Visit our Anxiety Symptoms section as often as needed for reassurance.

Once your doctor has attributed your symptoms solely to anxiety, you can visit our Anxiety Symptoms section for ongoing reassurance. This reassurance can help you contain, substantially reducing worry and added stress.

5. Faithfully practice your recovery strategies.

Faithfully practicing your recovery strategies will reduce stress, reducing and eventually ending your symptoms. Your confidence will soar as your symptoms diminish and subside, leaving little reason to worry.

6. Learn to tolerate the discomfort of your symptoms.

Anxiety symptoms are temporary. Even though they can be bothersome, they aren’t harmful. Learning to tolerate the temporary discomfort of anxiety symptoms is an important part of the skills we learn during recovery. Once learned, you’ll never be concerned about anxiety symptoms again.

The skill of passive-acceptance plays a major role in recovery and preventing rebounds.

7. Be patient.

Recovering from hyperstimulation takes time, often more than most people initially realize. As you work at recovery and faithfully practice your recovery strategies, you will see success, which can boost your confidence and eliminate the need to worry.

Patience is a skill that brings many benefits, and not only for anxiety disorder recovery.

While it might seem like worrying about symptoms will keep you stuck in anxiety and symptoms, there are ways to eliminate that problem, such as those mentioned above.

Working with an experienced anxiety disorder therapist is the most effective way to overcome issues with anxiety, worry, hyperstimulation, and symptoms.

The combination of good self-help information and working with an experienced anxiety disorder therapist, coach, or counselor is the most effective way to address anxiety and its many symptoms. Until the core causes of anxiety are addressed – which we call the underlying factors of anxiety – a struggle with anxiety unwellness can return again and again. Dealing with the underlying factors of anxiety is the best way to address problematic anxiety.
