Will my anxiety-caused tinnitus ever go away, or is it something I have to learn to live with?
We recommend discussing all new, changing, persistent, and returning anxiety symptoms with your doctor, as many medical conditions and medications can cause anxiety-like symptoms, including tinnitus.
You want to be sure your symptoms are solely anxiety-related before embarking on a treatment plan.
If your doctor has attributed your symptoms solely to anxiety, you can be confident there isn’t a medical or medication cause.
If you are unsure of your doctor’s diagnosis, seek a second or more opinions. However, if all opinions agree, again, you can be confident anxiety is the sole cause of your symptoms.
It’s our experience that stress is a common cause of tinnitus, including anxiety-caused stress. For instance, in an online poll we conducted, 57 percent of respondents said they had tinnitus due to their anxiety.
Keep in mind that anxiety symptoms are symptoms of stress. They are called anxiety symptoms because anxious behavior is the main source of stress that stresses the body, and a body under stress can exhibit symptoms of stress.
Chronic stress, which we call hyperstimulation because stress hormones are powerful stimulants, occurs when the body becomes chronically stressed due to overly anxious behavior.
As long as the body is hyperstimulated, even to a slight degree, it can exhibit symptoms, including frequent and persistent tinnitus.
I (Jim Folk) had tinnitus a lot during my struggle with anxiety disorder. I still get it from time to time when I let my stress elevate higher than I normally let it.
Again, tinnitus is a common symptom of stress, especially chronic stress.
As such, reducing and eliminating hyperstimulation will reduce and eliminate tinnitus. We’ve seen many people get rid of tinnitus as they worked on their recovery.
So, no. You don’t have to live with anxiety-caused tinnitus. It will subside when you address your anxiety and hyperstimulation.
You can read more about hyperstimulation-caused tinnitus in the Symptoms section.
