The Best Way To Overcome Health and Medical Fears and Anxiety

What is the best way to overcome health and medical fears and anxiety?

A great many anxious people have health and medical fears and anxiety. This becomes especially evident when they begin experiencing some of the many odd anxiety symptoms.

Health and medical fears are a reflection of our core fears: those fears at the root of our anxieties.

For example, core fears commonly associated with health and medical fears and anxiety include the fears of:

  • Death and dying
  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss
  • Uncertainty
  • Being out of control
  • Being alone
  • The unknown
  • Something ruining your life, and there's nothing you can do about it
  • What happens after death

To name a few.

While some people can overcome their core fears on their own, a therapist is almost always required to help resolve them because core fears are so central to our psyche.

Moreover, each person can have unique reasons why they have become afraid of health and medical matters. The reasons are often complex and multifaceted – deeply rooted in our systems of beliefs and core fears – and therefore, overcoming them using self-help materials alone is difficult and most often ineffective.

Furthermore, since we learn our fears, we often have what we believe to be good reasons to have them. So, most of us aren't able to convince ourselves of a less threatening view of them because we think they are pertinent and true.

A professional therapist can help you overcome core fears by helping you discover your personal reasons for them and providing you with healthy and more realistic ways of coping with them so they aren't threatening.

To that end, we recommend working with an experienced anxiety disorder therapist to overcome your health and medical fears since the success rate of using self-help materials alone to resolve core fears is low.

We also recommend working with a therapist who has had anxiety disorder and has had to resolve their own health and medical fears. We believe therapists who were only trained in resolving core fears and didn't personally experience them aren't as effective as those who have had to do this work themselves.

The good news is that we can be successful when we do the right work with the right help. But we must do the right work since core fears generally don't resolve on their own.

The combination of good self-help information and working with an experienced anxiety disorder therapist, coach, or counselor is the most effective way to address anxiety and its many symptoms. Until the core causes of anxiety are addressed – which we call the underlying factors of anxiety – a struggle with anxiety unwellness can return again and again. Dealing with the underlying factors of anxiety is the best way to address problematic anxiety.
