Diagnosis

First pursue medical diagnostics! The symptoms of a panic disorder can easily be confused with other medical problems, so thorough medical diagnostics are a necessary first step.

Consult a psychologist AND a psychiatrist (preferably both should specialize in anxiety or panic disorders). Hearing both perspectives will give you a better sense of what might be causing your attacks and the various options for treatment and recovery.

There are many kinds of panic disorders. Basically, any disorder that is mainly characterized by spontaneous "panic attacks" tends to be called a "panic disorder." Ongoing research is showing a variety of different causes for panic attacks. Some causes are very psychological in nature, some causes are very medical in nature, and the various psychological and medical causes can intermingle in many ways. Unfortunately, diagnosis of precise cause(s) in individual cases is not yet available.
